Navigating Politics as a Christian

In recent weeks, our congregation has been visually reminded of the essential question of who or what sits at the center of our lives by the presence of a grand throne on our platform. This imagery symbolizes the pivotal truth that at the heart of every human is a throne, where someone or something reigns over their life. Over the past few weeks, we've examined various aspects of life that can assume this central position, from careers to personal comforts and relationships. However, one significant area that we haven't touched upon is politics and government—a topic we're diving into today.
With a national election just days away, it's crucial to reflect on how our faith interacts with our political beliefs. The current political climate, characterized by division and discord, has enormous implications for our nation, the church, and our roles as followers of Christ. Christians often find themselves navigating the tension between political affiliations and faith, a challenge that can compromise the church's mission when handled poorly.
The Role of the Church in Politics
Some might wonder why the church would discuss politics. Ignoring this complex subject would leave Christians unprepared to think and act in ways that align with their faith during crucial cultural crossroads like elections. It's important to recognize that our purpose on Earth is not to save political systems but to witness the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our actions and behaviors, particularly in politics, should not turn people away from the church but invite them into its noble purpose.
The Lordship of Christ and Our Political Lives
Our primary focus today is not on party affiliation or political figures but on the Lordship of Jesus Christ in our lives. As followers, we must evaluate how the reign of Christ influences our thoughts and actions concerning politics. Most Christians struggle with integrating their faith into their political beliefs, often keeping politics separate from their spiritual lives. However, true submission to Christ means allowing His influence to permeate every aspect of our life, including how we engage politically.
Biblical Foundations and Practical Applications
Throughout this series on Lordship, we've examined passages such as 1 Peter 3:15, Matthew 6:33, and 1 Corinthians 10:31, which guide Christians to prioritize Christ's rule in all areas of life, including work and personal interactions. These teachings apply equally to the realm of politics. Christians are urged to approach their vote and political engagement with the same sincerity and alignment to biblical teachings as they would any other aspect of life.
How Should Christians Vote?
Voting is an expression of one's beliefs and values. While the Bible doesn't provide specific instructions on voting, it does offer guiding principles on how to let faith influence this civic duty. A Christ-centered approach to voting involves casting a vote that reflects the beliefs and values aligned with Christ's teachings. This requires prayerful consideration and discernment through scripture and the Holy Spirit.
Beyond Voting: How to Treat Those Who Disagree Politically
Equally important is how Christians treat individuals with differing political views. Jesus commanded His followers to love one another as He loved them, urging believers to approach others with patience, kindness, and a lack of arrogance or anger. This foundational aspect of Christian behavior should extend to political discussions and disagreements.
Conclusion
When the election results are finalized, and candidates are chosen, reactions of fear or anger may indicate that one's political beliefs have supplanted Christ’s place in their heart. Christ should be the sovereign Lord over all aspects of life, guiding both our votes and our relationships with others, regardless of political differences. In unity under Christ, let us hold hands across political and social divides, reflecting our shared faith amidst diversity.
As we continue to engage with the political landscape, may our actions speak to the presence of Christ on the throne of our hearts, living out the love and discernment He calls us to embody. Amen.
