Embracing the Authority of Scripture

Throughout this year, our discussions have delved into the core beliefs of the Christian faith. We explored the sovereignty of God, the centrality of Jesus, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. We've spent significant time considering the lordship of Jesus and the authority of the scriptures. This month, we conclude our focus by addressing how we, as Christians, can recognize the authority of scripture over our lives.

Recognizing Scripture's Authority

We've outlined a key logic: God, as the creator and sustainer, holds ultimate authority. Therefore, His words carry this authority. When we approach scriptures as a collection of God's authoritative words, we recognize that it holds sway over our lives. The crucial question we must ask ourselves is, "Do I recognize the authority of scripture and allow it to guide my life?"

Rebellion VS. Submission

Scripture presents us with a choice between a rebellious spirit and a submissive heart. Rebellion, described as foolish in the book of Proverbs, leads to challenging lives and strained relationships. Submission, on the other hand, is wise and acknowledges God’s superior wisdom. The wise person embraces the teachings of scripture, leading to a more fulfilling life.

The Living Word

Hebrews 4:12 reminds us that the Word of God is "living and active." Engaging with scripture regularly transforms our lives. A survey by the Center for Biblical Engagement shows significant positive changes in those who read scripture more than once weekly. Reading scripture consistently fosters deeper faith and nurtures spiritual growth.

Training in Righteousness

Second Timothy 3:16-17 tells us that all scripture is "God-breathed" and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness. Just like a coach who guides their players, scripture teaches and trains us in living a Christian life. By submitting to its authority, we become equipped to live the life Christ calls us to live.

A Call to Action

In today's society, Christianity faces opposition, with efforts to discredit the credibility of the Bible. By aligning our lives with scripture, we offer the strongest defense against these attacks. As Christians, our submission to God’s word is our declaration of commitment to its truths, standing against societal pressures.

In conclusion, as we embrace the authority of scripture, we declare our commitment to the truth of God in our lives. Let us, as a community, be filled with men, women, and children who recognize its authority and embody its teachings. Our willingness to submit to God's words stands as a testament to our faith. Let's continue to ensure that scripture holds its rightful place in our lives and in the world. Thank you for reading, and may we all strive to live out these teachings as we go forth this week.
